Simple Sri Lankan Picnic & Outdoor Recipes
We unexpectedly went on a family trip to a rural park last weekend. After opening our picnic basket, I discovered that several of the food were untidy or difficult to have outside. I learnt from the experience that, organizing easy, transportable, and delicious Sri Lankan picnic meals is essential to having a stress-free outdoor lunch. Since then, we've focused on foods that are easy to eat, travel well, and keep fresh.
# Easy-to-eat finger foods:
Traditional finger meals from Sri Lanka are most suitable for picnics because they don't need plates or tools.
Examples:
* Wade ( fries made with prawns or mung beans)
* Fish or vegetable rolls
* Pol Sambol and Roti
* String hoppers or mini hoppers (tiny parts for simple handling)
* Sliced veggies like cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots provide colour and nutrition to the dish.
# Nutritious Snacks:
When engaging in outdoor activities, everyone keeps energetic with healthy snacks.
A few suggestions:
* Cut fruits such as watermelon, pineapple, papaya, and mango.
* Pieces of coconut or little Kurakkan biscuit packets
* Packs of mixed nuts or seeds to increase protein.
Offering a variety of tastes, such as juicy, soft, and crunchy, ensures that everyone will find something they like.
# Cold Dish Filling:
Because they may be made just before time and keep fresh, cold meals are great for picnics:
* Use basic curries like dhal, potato, or chicken to make rice and curry in banana leaves.
* Vegetables and rice dish with a flavourful coconut dressing
* Chopped chicken or veggies in a cold string hopper dish
* Some of lime juice or a little bit of coconut milk keeps flavours fresh without making the food become watery.
# Sweet Delights:
* Traditional Sri Lankan sweets are excellent for eating in the outdoors: Aluwa, kokis, or kavum (tiny pieces for easier handling)
* Small banana muffins
* Seasonal tropical fruits in fruit cups
These keep things clean and portable while satisfying desires of sweets.
# Hydration & Drinks:
Staying hydrated is very important, particularly while you're outside:
* Fresh juice or King coconut water in secure bottles
* Water mixed with cucumber or lemon slices
Everyone may continue hydrated with these tasty, refreshing drinks.
